NBA News – Marc Gasol will play for his own club in the Spanish second division

Marc Gasol announced on Thursday that he will play for Basquet Girona in the Spanish second division. The club was founded in 2014 by Gasol, the Spaniard is both owner and president of the club.

As early as September there were first reports that the Spaniard would like to play in his home country again. Thanks to a commitment to the club founded by Gasol in 2014, the 36-year-old is now closer to his family again.

The center would therefore act as team president and be on the floor at the same time. After the current season, he wants to decide whether to end his career for good or to have another season on it. Between 2006 and 2008 he had already played for the previous club, CB Girona. Girona started the league with a balance of 2-7 and is hoping for an upward trend with Gasol in the lineup.

Other European teams are said to have been interested in the services of the former NBA star, such as FC Barcelona, whose jersey his brother Pau Gasol was already wearing.

The Big Man last played in the NBA with the Los Angeles Lakers, but was traded to the Memphis Grizzlies as part of a salary dump trade including a second-round pick (2024) and a sum of money. LA previously signed DeAndre Jordan and Dwight Howard.

For the Grizzlies, the Spaniard did not play a role in the squad planning for this season. Gasol spent eleven of his thirteen total NBA years in Memphis. He made it into the All-Star Team three times and was named Defensive Player of the Year in 2013. He won the championship with the Toronto Raptors in 2019.
