Meeting in sight to solve the soap opera Sergi Roberto

BarcelonaXavi Hernández wants Sergi Roberto on his team. Or so, at least, is what he has conveyed to both the player and the football director, Mateu Alemany, and the vice president of sports, Rafael Yuste. A few weeks before the relay on the bench, the talks to renew the Reus man stalled because the club asked him at the last minute for an effort of more than 30% regarding the reduction of the new agreement, until 2024 – Roberto has contract until 2022–. After several meetings in which the foundations of a downward agreement were laid, the signing was delayed to the point that the negotiation fell to a standstill because of the latter demand. The arrival of Xavi at the head of the first team promises to unlock the series.

As ARA has confirmed, a meeting between the footballer’s agents and Barça officials is scheduled for the end of this week. If it cannot be done by agenda, it will be postponed to the next one. At the table will be the most recent proposal, which now Roberto’s representatives will look at with different eyes because their will is to continue at Barça and be part of the reconstruction associated with the figure of Xavi. Roberto has to sign two interrelated agreements. First of all, a reduction in the contract year that is based on a postponement of part of the agreed fixed and a waiver of easily compliant variables, a plan that the entity already applies with the other three captains of La Masia: Gerard Piqué, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba. And then an extension of the contract until 2024, which, in principle, will include a reduction of more than 30% proposed in the verbal agreement that was not subsequently signed in a document.

There is some haste on both sides to close and announce the deal. On the one hand, the player wants to close the folder and is convinced that, once renewed, contractual stability will help him to have a more consistent performance than he has shown in recent months, in which he has been injured. often and has reduced benefits. And, on the other hand, the club intends to go out and sign in the winter market. Xavi needs extremes – as proof, the bet decided by Ilias and Abde in the match with Espanyol – and he has already asked for them, but before that Barça needs salary reductions or departures to make room for new signings. Therefore, progress is needed in this regard. Alemany already said on the day of Dani Alves’ presentation that the current situation only allowed the Brazilian to register in January. “We have nothing left,” said the Mallorcan executive.

Gavi, Araujo and Dembélé

Roberto aside, Alemany has several open fronts in Barça’s sports management in terms of renovations. The club ensured the continuity of Pedri González (2026) and Ansu Fati (2027) a few weeks ago and is also working to shield the future of Pablo Páez Gavi and Ronald Araujo. Both the Andalusian and the Uruguayan are called to play many campaigns at the Camp Nou, but their conditions do not match the importance they have on the team. For this reason, and despite the fact that they have a contract until 2023, there is a desire to update them in the short term. There are also talks to extend Ousmane Dembélé’s contract. Although he is an unreliable player physically, his profile fits the needs of Xavi, who is still confident of recovering the best version.
