Mariners buy All-Star second baseman Adam Frazier from the Padres

SEATTLE (AP) – The Seattle Mariners bought All-Star second goal Adam Frazier in a deal with the San Diego Padres on Saturday.

The move cost Seattle two minor leagues, but it covers one of the team’s biggest needs to get into the offseason; adds a midfielder to pair with card blocker JP Crawford. Frazier’s versatility means the Mariners can still be aggressive with other possible deals if another midfielder becomes available.
“19459002]” Adam is a proven, versatile and complete player, “Seattle general manager Jerry Dipoto said in a statement.” His presence extends our roster and our more complete squad. “

The Padres bought left-handed reliever Ray Kerr and outfielder Corey Rosier.

Kerr was added to the Mariners 40-man roster last week. He split time between Double-A Arkansas and Triple-A Tacoma last season.

Rosier was a 12th round pick in the 2021 UNC Greensboro Entry Draft. He spent last season on Single-A Modesto.

Frazier got off to a quick start last season with Pittsburgh, reaching .324 with .836 OPS and 28 doubles in 98 games. He transferred to San Diego in late July and passed out in the final two months of the season. In 57 games with the Padres, Frazer has beaten 0.267.

But Frazier puts the ball on the line, having never struck more than 75 strikes in a season and should help extend Seattle’s strike order. The Mariners featured eight players in more than 90 games last season and all have struck at least 99 times.

Defensively, Frazier has mostly played at second base or left field throughout his career. If the Mariners put Frazier in second, it would give them the opportunity to move Abraham Toro, bought last year from Houston before the trade deadline, to his natural third base position.

Frazier, who turns 30 next month, is under contract for $ 7.5 million this season. He is eligible for free agency after 2022. He earned $ 4.3 million last season.
