Judo Grand Slam of Abu Dhabi: The last medals of the year

Who won the last Judo Grand Slam medals of the year? Here comes the overview.

As part of the event, an agreement was signed between the International and the Mongolian Judo Association on the hosting of a Grand Slam in Ulanbator.

Mansur Lorsanow from Russia has by no means appeared as one of the best judoka in the weight class up to 90 kilograms. So it was time to change that. The 21-year-old surprised everyone in Abu Dhabi and won the competition: Lorsanow’s first major adult title.

Adamian shows his class again

Why is Arman Adamian currently considered the world’s best judo fighter in the weight class up to 100 kilograms? The Russian showed that again impressively. His gold medal in Abu Dhabi was an expression of his third World Tour victory that year. In the final fight he defeated his compatriot Matvey Kanikowski.

He was tired, said Adamian after the victory. He was now flying home, going on vacation, meeting with his family. In Russia it is Mother’s Day and he dedicates the medal to his mother, said the judoka.

Alina Böhm just missed gold

The British Emma Reid prevented the second German judo victory in Abu Dhabi. In the weight class up to 78 kilograms she was challenged by Alina Böhm from Böbingen an der Rems. The Brit countered Böhm, so the dream of the first world tour gold for the U18 European champion in 2015 fell through. For Reid, however, it came true. So far, a third place at the Grand Prix of Zagreb was the best result for the Briton.

For her, it’s a lot about believing in your own ability, about self-confidence, says Reid. This success will help her next year in the qualifying competitions in May, stressed the Briton.

Beatriz Souza: The second in the world rankings trumps

When it comes to world class women over 78 kilograms, the name Beatriz Souza is often mentioned. And that’s no wonder: the 23-year-old Brazilian is in second place in the world rankings and won bronze at the World Cup in June. From the last Grand Slam of the year, she preferred to take home gold. Souza determined what happened in the decisive battle against the French Lea Fontaine. The reward was her second Grand Slam victory after Brasilia in 2019.

Odkhuu underlines strong Mongolian performance

Always a little better, this is how the development of the Mongolian Tsetsent Angel Odkhuu can be described in the past few weeks. In Abu Dhabi, he won over 100 kilograms of gold in the men’s race; at the beginning of the month in Baku, the 22-year-old had finished third and in Paris in mid-October, fifth. This is called a steady increase in performance of the world number 36. In Abu Dhabi the Mongol defeated the Romanian Vladut Simionescu in the gold fight, who is 16 places ahead of him in the list of the best heavyweights in the world. The judo federation in Abu Dhabi was very successful with five medals.

Outside the mat, Marius Vizer, the chairman of the World Judo Federation, thanked the organizer. He presented the Vice President of the Ring and Judo Association of the United Arab Emirates, Mohamed Bin Thaeloub Alderee, with an object of art. The new judo year can come!
