Judo Legazpi begins to collect the fruits of his work from the hand of the child Xabier Parra, who was proclaimed runner-up of Euskadi in Amurrio

The Judo Legazpi club started the competition season last October. The training began shortly before the start of the school year, in order to regain the physical form that, in a way, was lost during the months of confinement. There were several aspects to work on, but that did not prevent athletes and coaches from setting goals for the new season.

A little less than a month ago, the judokas began with the competitions, achieving more than satisfactory results, both for themselves and for the coaches. Last weekend, in the Alava town of Amurrio, the judoka Xabier Parra was proclaimed runner-up in the Euskadi championship in the children’s category.

The young man started in the world of judo thanks to a friend, when he was about six years old. Today he is 14 and is gaining more and more experience in this sport. Parra began the day nervous, “I didn’t think I would stay in that position, I thought they were going to crush me.” But after winning the first fight, the nerves were dissipating. Fight after fight, the young man was climbing positions, and unfortunately he lost the last fight against a Biscayan judoka.

Now Parra will continue training hard, as he has done so far, under the guidance of his coach, Asier Berasategui. The young judoka is very comfortable with his club mates, as he says he is “very comfortable”, which has a positive influence on his results.

Big jump in category

Some of the club’s judokas are currently adapting to the new categories, due to the stoppage during confinement. Manex Uranga, Endika Pérez de Arenaza and Ruben Calvo stayed at the gates of the Euskadi championship last year 2019. They qualified in the Gipuzkoa championship, which was played in Zarautz, achieving very good positions in the ranking.

The Euskadi championship was a goal, until the confinement began and the three athletes were unable to compete. “We were well prepared, we had trained a lot, and in the end we were at the gates,” laments Uranga. To keep in shape, the three of them continued training at home, following the video call sessions, just like the other members.

Although they managed to keep the form, as far as possible, this year it is difficult for them to adapt to the category. When they had to stop, they were in the second year of childhood, and now, they are second-year cadets, “the change is very noticeable, there is a lot of level,” says Pérez de Arenaza.

The season is somewhat difficult for Uranga, Pérez de Arenaza and Calvo, but that does not mean that they cannot achieve good results. At the end of this month they are summoned to train with the Basque Country team in San Sebastián. “Despite everything they have a very good level, the scouts take them into account,” says coach Asier Berasategui proudly.
