Jorge Luis Robleda Moguel: Dream tennis

The Yucatan Youth World Cup

Spectacular Mexican tennis, unprecedented tennis for Yucatan. Before going into details about these lines, we want to specify very important aspects for the knowledge of kind readers.

There are in the world around 500 tournaments of the world ranking of 18 years and under of the International Tennis Federation. Since 1987 when we began as an exhibition event, the Yucatan World Cup has been climbing positions and today it is among the 10 most important youth tournaments in the terrestrial world: in addition to the four Grand Slam events (Wimbledon, Roland Garros, Australian Open and US Open), all of them Grade A, there are six others with this qualification. Namely, the Orange Bowl, the Japan Open, the Youth in Rome, the one in South Africa and one more in Brazil. It should be noted that there are few youth tournaments that are played at night, the most famous are the Coffee Cup in Costa Rica and the Yucatan World Cup.

The Yucatan Youth World Cup is among these events and it is the only one that is not in a large city in the entire world. Victoria Jiménez, the number 1, returned to play this year in memory that in 201.9 for the first time in her life, she played with a full stadium and won the 33rd edition of the Yucatan Youth World Cup. This experience made him return on this occasion.

After the suspension of 2020 and before a tennis public eager for sporting events, this coupled with the spectacular performances of Rodrigo Pacheco, recent winner of Group 1 in Guadalajara, made the Club Campestre courts crowded with knowledgeable people and new fans to this sport.

What happened on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, with a full stadium to watch Rodrigo’s matches, will go down in the history of these 34 editions, as the largest concentration of fans of white sports. This will force the organizing committee to take new measures to avoid the excess noise and movement of people that we had on this occasion.

The tennis education rules are some for individual tournaments and others for country events such as the Davis Cup and the Federation Cup. In the first case the tennis player plays; in the second case we all play because it is our country that is in action. In cases such as what happened this week at the Country Club, the excitement of seeing a local and measuring yourself for you with the best in the youth world, somehow justifies the popular overflow and makes the triumph of the Croatian Dino Prizmic bigger, who overcame the noise in support of the premises and won the quarterfinals.

Without a doubt, we will have to rethink people’s access to these events, reinforce the boxes and the stands in general, but there are also new factors that thin the atmosphere, or make it different. The first two days a group of girls between 10 and 12 years old were more interested in taking photos with a well-known influencer than with tennis players, and to finish we appreciate the enormous coverage and we will begin to prepare for what follows, an edition 35 with the presence of one of our own among the best youth tennis players in the world.— Mérida, Yucatán, November 2021
