Major League Baseball Hot Stove warms up ahead of the impending strike. The current collective agreement (CPA) expires Wednesday night and free agent activity will cease until the players union and league reach a new agreement, which could take several months.
Many players and teams get deals before the lockdown, and this has led to the free agent craze in the past couple of days. From Tuesday morning, Six of our top 10 free agents have signed up:
- SS Carlos Corea
- SS Cory Seeker: 10 years, $ 325 million from Rangers
- 3B / DI Chris Bryant
- SE Marcus Semion: 7 years, $ 175 million from Rangers
- 1B Freddie Freeman
- LHP Robbie Ray: 5 years, $ 115 million with the Marines
- RHP Max Scherzer: 3 years, $ 130 million with Mets
- RHP Kevin Causeman: 5 years, $ 110 million with Blue Jazz
- RHP Marcus Stroman
- Martin cancellation: 4 years, $ 78 million with Mets
Rangers and Mets were the most active teams in free agency, and it wasn’t particularly close. In addition to Seeker and Semian, Texas also signed right-footed John Gray and fielder Cole Calhoun. He signed with Mets infielder Eduardo Escobar and outfielder Mark Kanha, along with Scherzer and Marte. Both clubs have donated over $ 800 million to free agents.
Although free agency has been very active in the last few days, the trading market has cooled considerably, at least for now. The Pirates sent catcher Jacob Stallings to the Marlins for three players on Tuesday, which was worthy of a significant trade. My guess is that the teams will focus on free agency before the CBA expires and then take care of trading.
Its value is that Tuesday will be the “soft” deadline for signing free agents as teams and players will take time to process contract details and review medical information before the CBA expires. Both parties cannot put pen to paper with a last minute agreement. Check out the important free agent offers taking place from Sunday night here.
