COLOMBIA.-Ariela Sánchez won a gold medal, Antonio Tornal won silver and Aleida Guerrero a bronze on the first date of the judo tournament of the First Junior Pan American Games.

Sánchez, who trains in Valencia, Spain, defeated Edith Ortiz Carrión, from Ecuador, by ippon in the final of the women’s minus 63 kilos category.

On her way to gold, Ariela beat Nahiara Feliciano Williams of Puerto Rico 1-0, while in the semifinal she defeated Mexican Katia Castillo Bustos.

Tornal, a bronze medalist at the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina, took the silver when he fell in the final against Brazilian Gabriel Falcao Lira at less than 73 kilos.

In the quarterfinals, Tornal dispatched Sebastián Otiniano Ramírez, from Peru, and in the semifinal he defeated Mexican Jorge Pérez Rafful.

Aleida Liliana Guerrero gave the country the second medal in the Panam Junior de Cali by obtaining bronze in the women’s minus 48 kilos category of the judo tournament.

In the dispute for the bronze, Aleida beat Mikaela Rojas García, from Argentina, 1-0.

In her first match, the youthful judoka fell 0-1 to Brazilian Alexia Vilhalba Souza, and then defeated Costa Rican Amaya Pérez Solano, as well as Noemi Bonilla Rodríguez, from Peru in the next two repechage matches.

In other judo results, Antfernee Pepín fell to Arnold Prado Ramos, from Peru, in the dispute for the bronze in less than 60 kilos, while Ana Bonilla was eliminated after losing her first fight 0-1 to Sheila López del Cid, from Argentina, and Clara Barinas Benítez was defeated by Tasha Cancela, from the United States.

Gymnastics

Jabiel Polanco advanced to the men’s overall individual final by positioning himself in the qualifying round held at the El Pueblo Coliseum in Cali.

Polanco obtained second place in rings, with a score of 12.6, while in parallel bars he was fourth with 11.95 and in jumping he finished eighth with 13,425.

On the ground, the Quisqueyano was in 16th place with 11.35 points, and on pommel horse he finished in 23rd place with 7.65 points.

In general individual, Polanco was located in the fourth place, valid to dispute medals.

BASEBALL POSTPONED BY RAIN

The game that the baseball team would play against Colombia was postponed because of the rain on Friday.

TRIATHLON
