“I could have walked out of the hospital with just one leg”

Nine months after his very serious car accident in which he nearly lost his right leg, Tiger Woods told Golf Digest that he hopes to return to the PGA Tour one day, but will no longer play full-time.

On February 23, Tiger Woods was the victim of a serious car accident in Los Angeles, from which he emerged with open fractures of the tibia and fibula and an ankle injury. Eleven months later, the legendary golfer with fifteen Grand Slam titles spoke about his possible return in an interview with Golf Digest. As he turns 46 at the end of the year, the Californian knows that the best part of his career is behind him. ” I think it’s realistic to want to play on the PGA Tour again someday. No longer full-time but choosing tournaments just like Ben Hogan had done (victim of a serious car accident at 37, he had won six Grand Slam tournaments then, editor’s note). Pick a few tournaments a year and you play around that. You train around it and prepare yourself for it. I think that’s how I’m going to have to do it from here on out. “

Woods: “Reaching the top is not a realistic expectation on my part”

Already back from several injuries, especially to the back and knee, Tiger Woods, who came close to amputation, does not feel able to return to the highest level. “It’s a sad reality, but it’s my reality,” he admits. And I understand it, and I accept it. I wouldn’t say it was 50/50, but it was damn close, I could have walked out of the hospital with just one leg. I don’t have to compete and play against the best players in the world to have a good life. After my back injury, I had to climb Mount Everest once again. I had to do it, and I did. This time around I don’t think I’ll have the body to climb Mount Everest and that’s okay. I can still play golf. I can always, if my leg is okay, I can always click on a tournament here or there. But in terms of climbing the mountain again and getting to the top, I don’t think that’s a realistic expectation on my part. “

Woods: “I’m not even halfway”

As for the date of his return to the circuit Tiger Woods obviously does not know it yet, because it will be necessary to be patient. “I have so far to go. I’m not even halfway there. I have so much muscle building and nerve development for my leg to do. I am able to walk on my own now, but still have difficulty going up or down. I am able to steal and putter and do other things, but I have no stamina. I haven’t done it enough, so I’m getting tired. As the leg strengthens, the back can sometimes react. It is a difficult road. While waiting for his body to strengthen, Tiger Woods consoles himself by going to see his 12-year-old son Charlie play. Succession ?
