The New York Yankees have as one of their priorities in free agency the signing of a shortstop for the 2022 MLB season who provides good defense and solid production on offense.
One of the names on the market today is Trevor Story, a player they tried to land last season during conversations that took place near the set deadline.
Story is coming off a contest in which he hit .251, 24 homers and 75 RBIs for the Colorado Rockies in a total of 142 games. In addition, he recorded 14 errors in 1,175 innings played as shortstop, which gave him a defensive percentage of .975, according to the Baseball Reference portal.
With these statistics, Story representatives aspire to land a contract of $ 29.8 million per year for the next 8 years, according to Spotrac estimates.
Assuming the Yankees make the risky bet on Story, the team would be playing a player who has two All-Star picks and two Silver Bats in his career.
However, he would be signing another bat from the right side of the plate that would add to his extensive collection of hitters of this type, who would not cause any change in strategy to his rivals and neither balance to his lineup.
Should Story land in the Bronx, he would be the club’s fifth hitter and shortstop, after Giancarlo Stanton and before Gleyber Torres or Gary Sánchez.
He would form the key around the second pad with Gleyber Torres leaving Gio Urshela and DJ Le Mahieu for third and first bases, respectively.
