How China’s censorship hushed up a sex scandal

Tennis player Peng Shuai has made rape allegations against ex-Vice Prime Minister Zhang Gaoli. The CP elite is trying to sweep the exemplary “Me Too” case under the rug.

The allegation of sexual violence, which tennis player Peng Shuai described in a post on Tuesday night, is not uncommon in the patriarchal society of China. But the fact that he is publicly charged against a top politician of the Communist Party has so far been unheard of.

35-year-old Peng claims that she was forced to have sexual intercourse by Zhang Gaoli, who is now 74. Zhang, vice premier between 2013 and 2018, is considered one of the most powerful men in the country. Even if the prosecutor speaks of a consensual affair, even of feelings of love, her core charge is shocking: The first sexual contact was made under duress – a rape.

“Even if it’s just me – like an egg striking a stone; a moth that flies in the flame, advertising for self-destruction: I will tell the truth about you, “says the emotional post that the tennis player published on the online platform Weibo.
