Green shoots of Spain in the NBA

Generational changes are always hard because, beforehand, all past times were better. Spanish basketball in the NBA is looking for a new identity after the gradual departure of its myths and all responsibility now falls on the young players, somewhat unnoticed, hidden even in the early stages of the season. With a quarter of the regular phase calendar completed, only Ricky Rubio he had shown authority in the Cleveland Cavaliers, the last survivor of a now practically extinct golden generation. However, in recent days a name has shown good form and desire to vindicate national basketball (and himself) on the other side of the Atlantic.

Willy Hernangómez begins to link good games in the New Orleans Pelicans.

Quite a surprise because the Madrid pivot had been excluded in the first steps of the team in the new season, so much so that even it took several weeks to take off his tracksuit to make his official debut in the 21/22 campaign (it started on October 19 and Willy played his first minutes on November 4). Old water because, at least for now, the Spanish has made a hole in the rotation. Yesterday, the Pelicans beat Los Angeles Clippers (123-104) with nine points and six rebounds from the former Real Madrid player in just 16 minutes on the court. His best performance, however, was last Saturday, when he finished with 13 points, eight rebounds and five assists in his victory over the Utah Jazz (98-97).

«I am moved by the love for basketball and the passion I have for this sport. The game is super fun ”, declared Hernangómez after the meeting. His claim may surprise more than one, as the player, 27 years, is one of the NBA’s Spaniards who has been in the league for the longest time. A trajectory of ups and downs in which you have gone through three teams (New York Knicks, Charlotte Hornets and the aforementioned Pelicans) in six seasons. Instability that seems to decrease with the Madrid player being an important piece of a team that, despite occupying the lowest places in the Western conference, seems to reappear.

If Willy brings good news, the rest of the Spanish remain anonymous in their respective teams. His brother Juancho, in the Boston Celtics, has only accumulated 38 minutes in the 20 games played by the team. The two debutants do not enjoy better luck either: the canary Saints Aldama He only jumps off the bench when the Memphis Grizzlies have sentenced the game, for better or for worse, and Usman Garuba He has seen the Houston Rockets enlist him in the development league, a common practice for young people who have a hard time adjusting to American basketball. Difficult times for a generation that has the titanic mission of replacing the best players in the history of Spain. All beginnings are difficult.
