Napoli unveils statue for Maradona in stadium

Italian football club Napoli has unveiled a statue of Diego Maradona ahead of their home game against Lazio. It was a year ago this week that the Argentinian passed away at the age of 60. That happened on November 25, 2020.

Napoli already decided at the time to name the Stadio San Paolo after Maradona. Since Sunday, a statue of the Argentine legend has also been placed in the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona. The creators have captured the Argentinian in a running pose, with a ball on his right knee. The statue stands on a pedestal in the shape of the number 10, Maradona’s fixed number.

Napoli had invited many former teammates of the Argentine to the game against Lazio. FIFA president Gianni Infantino also sat in the stands next to Napoli owner Aurelio de Laurentiis. Just like last week against Inter Milan, Dries Mertens and his teammates wore a shirt with an image of Maradona on it.

The Argentine played for Napoli from 1984 to 1991. He gave the club two league titles, in 1987 and 1990, and a win of the UEFA Cup in 1989.
