Fenway expands his empire: after Liverpool bought the Penguins

Fenway Sports Group (FSG), owner of Liverpool and Boston Red Sox baseball, expands its empire: as reported by the CNN, the company has reached an agreement to purchase the Pittsburgh Penguins, a company of the NHL, the world’s top ice hockey league.

As part of the deal, Mario Lemieux, the club’s historic flag, and entrepreneur Ron Burkle will remain part of the management. Lemieux, in particular, had saved the club from bankruptcy in 1999, becoming its owner and serving in its ranks until 2006, even winning the title.

“We will work diligently to continue building on the Penguins’ extraordinary tradition of championship and thrilling play” said Tom Werner, president of FSG. “We are particularly excited to welcome Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle to FSG and have the utmost respect for everything they have done to build the Penguins into the ever-successful franchise we know today.”.
