Ex-Bayern player Renato Sanches on failed Barca move: “A shock”

Renato Sanches from Lille OSC saw each other at FC Barcelona last summer. The Portuguese, who was under contract with FC Bayern for three years between 2016 and 2019, revealed this to the French sports newspaper The team. However, a knee injury that he sustained at the start of the season in France prevented the transfer.

When asked why the move failed, Sanches said, “I think it was the injury.”

His dream burst, what he called “shock”. “There are only ups and downs in football, I’m used to it,” he finally came to terms with it.

Sanches on Bayern time: “I was too young”

In 2016, at the age of 18, Sanches moved from Benfica to FC Bayern for 35 million euros, where he struggled. “When I came to Bayern, I wasn’t ready. I was still too young,” he now confessed. “And when I felt ready, the opportunity never came to play for this team,” he added.

In 2019 he went to Lille and was sensationally French champion with the mastiffs last season. “Lille is my club, my home,” he said with satisfaction.
