Days of revolution in tennis

A lot to process about a historic week at the WTA Finals in Guadalajara. The tournament, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in Latin America for the first time, has fascinated the body that directs women’s tennis and even the international press. When due to pandemic restrictions, the prestigious competition that brings together the best eight tennis players of the season made the risky decision to be held in Perla Tapatia, where Octagon, the organizers, had only eight weeks of preparation, few of us imagined a success so resounding. But the magic of a committed fans amazed the players and even the three legends present. The historical rivals Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert served as ambassadors of the event and the founder of the WTA and revolutionary idol in the fight for equal rights in this sport, Billie Jean King, decided at the last minute to fly to Guadalajara after seeing in the broadcasts the environment. The three coincide, the sport is not at all what it was in its time, but without a doubt today’s tennis players live much of the dream that they had. Especially Garbiñe Muguruza. The charisma of the first Spanish woman to win the Finals and who had already been a two-time champion at the Monterrey Open, once again conquered the national public. She reached the third most important title of her career, after two Grand Slams, and she did it hand in hand with another historic one like Conchita Martínez, her coach and confidant. However, the battle for equal opportunities does not end, and while the circuits live their season finale with huge spotlights, the white sports industry has been shaken with the disappearance of Peng Shuai, former No. 1 in doubles. The Chinese player accused a former senior government official of sexual abuse on Weibo and has since disappeared. The WTA pressures demanding answers, like great sports stars who demonstrate in networks with the #WhereIsPengShuai. If this scandal is not resolved as soon as possible, the requirement should be to immediately cut commercial commitments with the Asian giant, where the Finals, among several other events, have been agreed from 2022 to 2030. The ATP, which is expected to merge with the WTA in the medium term, should follow such action.
