Davis Cup live in the ticker – Germany against Great Britain: Struff and Co. fight for the semi-finals

After the strong performances in the group stage, the German Davis Cup team is hot for the first semi-finals in 14 years.

“I’m in good spirits. We are in a good position, we have nothing to lose,” said Michael Kohlmann after reaching the quarter-finals against the favored British team: “We have a chance of making it to the semi-finals. That is our goal.”

Two years ago at the premiere of the Davis Cup final in Madrid there was this encounter in the quarter-finals, Jan-Lennard Struff and Co. expected great chances – but Great Britain won 2-0. “I want revenge,” emphasized Kohlmann in advance.

Evans – Gojowczyk – 6:2, 5:1

5: 1 for the British in the second set. Evans is playing too confidently today and takes advantage of every mistake. Another service game to zero. The German now serves against the match.

Evans – Gojowczyk – 6:2, 4:1

And now Evans is very close to a preliminary decision here. With 30: 0 he is back in Gojowczyk’s service game, but the latter defends himself and places both on 30. With the 20th (!) Unforced Error, the German has his back to the wall and Evans puts the breakball perfectly on the line. 4: 1 for Evans and two breaks up front, now the German needs a little miracle …

Evans – Gojowczyk – 6:2, 3:1

Unchanged picture at the service games of the British. Gojowczyk is close at 30:30, but Evans serves again at the right time and brings the game through. 3: 1 and so far without approved breakballs, a very confident performance by Evans.

Evans – Gojowczyk – 6:2, 2:1

Gojowczyk makes his service game through, but that was hard work again. There are simply too many mistakes in German, which early in the second sentence already has 17 Unforced Errors, Evans only has two. Even now he is back in the debut and loses the rally. Evans can’t use the breakball and the German just frees himself with two aces. Only 1: 2, is there anything going on here for Gojowczyk?

Evans – Gojowczyk – 6:2, 2:0

And Evans takes the momentum of the early break with him and also wins the crucial long rallies. Service game to zero and 2-0 for the British. At the moment there is not much to suggest a German comeback.

Evans – Gojowczyk – 6:2, 1:0

Important first service game for Gojowczyk in the second set and that’s where he starts to swim again and is quickly 0:30 behind. He comes back with two good serves but is back in the debut. He hits a forehand with the frame and fends off a breakball. A forehand then ends up back on the net unrestrictedly and the German’s body language also exudes optimism. Evans takes advantage of this and takes the next break. Again 0: 1 from the perspective of the German.

Evans – Gojowczyk – 6:2

And even under pressure Evans doesn’t show any nakedness and confidently takes the first set. He was the player who made clearly fewer mistakes and who bagged the first set after just under half an hour.

Evans – Gojowczyk – 5:2

Gojowczyk does what he has to do in order not to give in the first sentence too early. Evans plays two balls out of bounds, something that has rarely been seen before. So the German can take a deep breath and shorten it at first.

Evans – Gojowczyk – 5:1

Gojowczyk is braver and plays well, but Evans has played almost flawlessly so far. The German again leaves two forehand strokes too long and does not come into the position to put the British under real pressure. 5: 1 for Evans.

Evans – Gojowczyk – 4:1

After a strong forehand from the German, the box can be heard loudly for the first time. The German risks a little more and is rewarded. He wins his first service game and that to zero. Only 1: 4.

Evans – Gojowczyk – 4:0

Gojowczyk is now better at play and looks more determined in rallies. He fought his way into the debut twice, but Evans kept his nerve and made his service game with the third ball. 0: 4 from the perspective of the German.

Evans – Gojowczyk – 3:0

It’s not going well for Gojowczyk yet. Evans is clearly the more active player and takes the service game from the German to zero. This is a start for Great Britain.

Evans – Gojowczyk – 2:0

Evans doesn’t seem confident in the first service game either. The Briton, however, benefits from simple mistakes made by the German. 2-0 for Evans.

Evans – Gojowczyk – 1:0

Troubled start for the German, who has to go twice over the second serve and is 0:30 behind. Then he sprinkled a double fault at 30:30 and left a backhand too long for Evans on breakball. Early break for the British!

Evans – Gojowczyk: Walk In

The two players have entered the court and are playing themselves. It starts in a few moments!

Evans – Gojowczyk: Head-to-head comparison

A look at the direct comparison shows that the two only played against each other twice. In 2013 and 2016, both times, however, the German won straight away. Is that a good omen?

INFO – Outlook

Davis Cup captain Michael Kohlmann relies on Peter Gojowczyk for the first time in the quarter-finals against Great Britain in the singles. The Munich tennis professional, who last played in the German Davis Cup team seven years ago, replaces Dominik Koepfer and meets Daniel Evans in the first match of the day.

In the second individual, Jan-Lennard Struff faces 12th in the world ranking Cameron Norrie, who surprisingly won the Masters tournament in Indian Wells just last month.

For the doubles Kohlmann nominated again Kevin Krawietz and Tim Pütz who will compete against Joe Salisbury / Neal Skupski.
