CHAMPIONS LEAGUE – Liverpool continue their clear round against FC Porto

A fifth victory in as many matches and a second clean sheet in a row: Liverpool continue to fly over group B. The reds, reshaped, have long suffered at Anfield against Porto, but Sergio Conceicao’s team, much too clumsy offensively, was ultimately dominated thanks to goals from Thiago Alcantara and Mohamed Salah (2-0). The Dragoes, second with a point ahead of AC Milan and Atlético Madrid, will play their qualification in eighth at home in two weeks against the Colchoneros.

Tons of regrets for Porto. While, in Madrid, AC Milan fulfilled its part of the contract by dominating Atlético, the Lusitanians, who had to count on a defeat of the Spaniards and a success in England to qualify from this 5th day for the following round, fell at the end of an evening when they could have done much better. Especially since Jurgen Klopp, deprived of Firmino (injured), had left part of his executives at rest (Van Dijk, Alexander-Arnold and Fabinho on the bench), offering his first appearance in C1 in the middle Tyler Morton (19) .

Porto spoiled too much, Liverpool took advantage

On a commando mission, Mehdi Taremi’s teammates therefore attacked the meeting very hard. On two high recoveries (8th, 12th), they almost opened the scoring, but like the enormous failure of Otavio, who opened his foot too much alone against the goal of the Reds, hampered by the return of Konstantinos Tsimikas, the Portuguese started their festival of blunders. A first hot opportunity on a missed clearance from Diogo Costa (24th), and a goal refused by nothing for an offside from Sadio Mané (37th), were not enough to alert the Portuguese, who have again missed a great opportunity on this face-to-face where Taremi showed an excess of altruism against Alisson (42nd).

Despite a good start to the visitors’ second period, Mateus Uribe saw his pivotal strike in the area grazing the frame (49th). Porto’s luck was definitely over. Since three minutes later, on a free kick rejected by the Portuguese defense Alcantara unleashed a superb strike to open his goal counter this season with the Reds and thrill Anfield (1-0, 52nd). Stunned, the teammates of Pepe, left prematurely on injury for his 100th in C1 (25th), then suffered the onslaught of Liverpuldiens.

By dint of bending (61st, 62nd), the Porto players ended up cracking again on a goal from the inevitable Mohamed Salah, author of a millimeter strike after a brilliant body feint in the area, and author of his sixth goal in five C1 matches this season (2-0, 70th). The Reds were then able to calmly negotiate their end of the meeting. The club with 29 league titles in Portugal will have to work until the end of this group stage to hope to move to 8th.
