“It means a lot to be able to play again and help your teammates from inside the field.” Despite his “respect”, he has always been the most important thing for Carles Mas. The 28-year-old from Banyoles suffered a fracture in the front of his skull in the first pre-season friendly against Barça B and has since focused on working to recover – overcoming a two-finger fracture along the way. of the hand. Of course, with the utmost caution because “an injury to the head is not the same as any other part of the body.” Mas made his debut last Sunday against Granollers (1-1) in his fifth season at Olot. Coach Albert Carbó was called on to replace Èric Callís after 67 minutes. “It was good to play the first few minutes. I pulled out the thorn I had been dragging for a long time, despite being a little scared so that nothing would happen to me again. It’s been a tough few months, but now it’s over, ”he says.

The reception at the Municipal was what left him most “happy”. “Olot fans applauded me a lot when I came in and I’m grateful,” he says. Before the match, Mas had commented with Carbó that “it would be good to introduce me little by little”. “I know I can’t start from the start because I’m not at the same pace as my teammates,” he points out. Banyolí has completed his recovery with individual training sessions, but he still has a few with the group. In addition, he had to do it without haste because as he suffered two injuries “any impact could cause him to relapse.”

Aside from breaking two fingers on the first day he returned to work, the heaviest recovery has been from a skull fracture. Being a delicate area, it needed rest so that the bone would consolidate. “I don’t have any discomfort, but it’s not quite there yet. I have to be careful to see how I evolve. That’s why I wear a helmet and will wear it for quite some time. Anatomically, the shape of my head has been different to me than before the injury. Now the forces are distributed differently if I have a blow and it could be that the same area is broken again “, he explains. Any precaution is small. Especially considering its position: central. “It’s clear that I can’t be afraid of the defense. Maybe another player can afford not to go one hundred percent to all the balls, but I can’t. I have to look for the air, to be strong, to try to go strong and not to curl up “, he affirms.

Despite being such a complicated injury, Mas has never considered leaving football: “At the first CT scan it looked like he could have a cerebral haemorrhage, but it was immediately ruled out and I was clear. The fracture did not affect any major area of my head and, beyond being aware that the area is weaker, it has never occurred to me to leave it.

Until now he had had to help the Garrotxins from the outside, but he already participates from the inside and celebrates it. “Like the rest of the years in Olot, I want to achieve the collective goals. I want to play, be important and contribute my experience. I want to get back what we lost last year. Going up would make me very happy “, he concludes.
