Betis falls with a crash against Leverkusen

The Betis was beaten by Bayer Leverkusen (4-0) in the fourth day of the Europa League, in which he conceded his first defeat in the tournament with an unmitigated win against an unstoppable rival and that he is the leader of his group with 10 points, in front of the 7 of the Betics, now stalked by Celtic, third with 6.

The German team was far superior to the Spanish, especially in the first half, in which they went ahead with a goal from the French Moussa Diaby In the 42nd minute, and in the resumption, despite Betis’ attempt to react, Bayer rounded off a great game that ended with the expulsions of Fekir y Demirbay with the same from Diaby and, already in the final stretch, from Wirtz and Amiri.

The roosters of the group were measured, equal to 7 points (2 wins each and a draw to a goal in the duel between the two in Seville), so that winning at BayArena was key for both teams to qualify and opt to a leadership that entails a direct pass to the second round, without the previous tie against a rival from the Champions League.

Within his philosophy of rotating his squad that he is giving such good results and it is assumed that not by looking at Sunday’s derby against Sevilla, for all that was at stake, the Chilean coach Manuel Pellegrini introduced up to ten changes in the eleven compared to the one that lost in the league against Atlético (3-0).

From the Portuguese goalkeeper Rui Silva to the entire defense, the return of Argentine Guido Rodríguez and French Nabil Fekir, along with Joaquín or Borja Iglesias, were the novelties. Only the Portuguese midfielder William Carvalho repeated against a Bayer Leverkusen with losses and with his Argentine striker Alario, who was doubtful due to discomfort, on the bench.

After an equal start, it was soon seen that the Leverkusen had one more gear and, after notices from the Frenchman Moussa Diaby, a real nightmare due to his speed for the insecure Betis rear, and Demirbay, the team of the Swiss of Galician origin Gerardo Seoane took command against Betis with doubts and timidity.

Much superior to the Spanish team in the first half, the Rhenish team imposed its verticality against a green and white team that hardly generated dangerous actions above. With a lot of talent for it on his bench like Sergio Canales, Rodri Sánchez or the Mexican Diego Lainez, but with less physicality.

Bayer Leverkusen warned again at the halfway point of this period with a shot from the Frenchman Adli that saved on the goal line Marc Bartra and a goal finally canceled by the VAR, for a clear offside, from the Dutch Jeremie Frimpong, while Betis only scared Lukas Hradecky with a low shot from Fekir that, with difficulties, deflected the Finnish goal in 35 minutes.

A mirage in the midst of the dominance and persistence of the Germans, who reaped the fruit of their incisive game 3 minutes before the break with 1-0, the work of Diaby, passed by the omnipresent young forward Florian Wirtz, with a volley with the right.

In the resumption, Pellegrini reacted and put Canales and Álex Moreno on the field first with a stroke and then Rodri, Brazilian Willian José and Juanmi, and the team perfectly understood his offensive message, but it was of no use to them because Bayer, very vertical and who did not stop creating chances against the fragile Verdiblanca defense, followed his own and detracted an inconsistent Betis based on goals and unrecognizable.

The Betics took a step forward, changed their image in search of the tie and prowled Hradecky’s goal much more, but received a blow seven minutes into the second half, when Diaby once again exposed the Spanish behind by establishing the 2-0 with a shot that Víctor Ruiz deflected.

Fekir hit the crossbar on a direct free kick in the 67th minute and later on, Marc Bartra headed with danger a center, but ran into the stoppage of the Bayer goal.

As the minutes passed, Betis went unhinged, especially in the final stretch, when two consecutive goals came from Wirtz, after a masterful pass from Diaby, and another from German Nadiem Amiri, with new assistance from the French, the figure of the match. , at minutes 86 and 90.

The win made a dent in the Andalusian team, in which Fekir was the example of his impotence by losing his nerves and starring in a mutual aggression with Demirbay, which led to a tangana and expulsions with a direct red from Betic and German. It was the mirror of the desperation of a Betis surpassed.
