Hanover – Germany’s tennis legend Boris Becker trusts Olympic champion Alexander Zverev to win a Grand Slam title and jump to number one in the world rankings in the near future.

“My tip is that he will win his first Grand Slam tournament next year and be number one,” said Becker in the Eurosport podcast “Das Yellow vom Ball”. “But whether he will be number one at the end of the year, Daniil (Medvedev) and Novak (Djokovic) will have their say. But he’ll be number one at some point in the next year. ”

Zverev has just won the ATP Finals in Turin. At the end of a successful year with winning the gold medal at the Olympic Games in Tokyo as the highlight, he is in third place in the ranking behind Djokovic and Medvedev.

Dominierendes Trio 2022

According to Becker, the trio will continue to dominate in the coming year. Especially since there is still a question mark behind the comebacks of Rafael Nadal and especially Roger Federer and the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas is currently injured. «I think Daniil and Sascha will fight for number one with Novak. Djokovic is still the king, but I think Daniil and Sascha will come close, “said Becker. “What has happened since the US Open was a sign. That will continue. I think these three are one step further than the rest of the field. ”

Medvedev had beaten Djokovic in the final of the US Open. Zverev defeated the Serb, who won the Australian Open, the French Open and Wimbledon this year, in the semifinals of the Olympics and most recently in the semifinals of the ATP Finals.

The first Grand Slam tournament of the new season will take place in Melbourne from January 17th to 30th.
