Xi’an News Network reported that in the past, strokes were more common in the elderly, but in recent years, the proportion of young people suffering from cerebrovascular diseases has greatly increased, and strokes have become closer to young people…

Recently, the Department of Neurology of the Third Hospital of Xi’an City admitted a number of young patients with strokes caused by carotid artery dissection. After the doctor asked about the medical history, they found that these patients had received various degrees of neck massage before the onset of the disease. Under the guidance of professionals, proper massage can relax muscles and relieve fatigue, but irregular neck activities may lead to arterial dissection. In fact, not only neck massage, incorrect yoga movements, exercise stretching, cupping, etc., may cause arterial dissection, and even directly induce stroke.

Experts point out that arterial dissection refers to a tear in the arterial wall layer that causes blood components to enter the vascular wall through the damaged vascular intima, causing the vascular wall to stratify, causing vascular stenosis, occlusion, or the formation of pseudoaneurysms. According to the data, there is no significant difference in the incidence of arterial dissection between men and women. 80% of them occur in people aged 30-50, with young and middle-aged being the high-incidence period.

The most common causes of arterial dissection in young patients are history of non-traumatic head and neck trauma, minor trauma, neck massage, massage, and even cough, vomiting, sneezing, and certain sports activities such as weightlifting, badminton, and yoga. Inertial head tilting during emergency braking, long time playing with mobile phones, etc., all of these may lead to arterial dissection. Among the arterial dissections, cervical and vertebral artery dissections are the most common.

The main clinical manifestations are: 1. When a vertebral artery dissection occurs, because the patient’s blood flow enters the endothelium of the blood vessel, it is easy to cause insufficient blood supply to the vertebral artery and basilar artery, and cause a series of symptoms, mainly manifested as intermittent and paroxysmal nerve function obstacle. 2. Patients may have brainstem symptoms such as diplopia, dysarthria, and dysphagia, as well as cerebellar symptoms such as dizziness and ataxia, and even some patients may have bilateral amaurosis or homotrophic hemianopia and other occipital lobe brains. Symptoms of tissue ischemia. 3. Patients with vertebral artery dissection often experience symptoms such as posterior occipital pain or occipital pain, subarachnoid hemorrhage, posterior circulation ischemic stroke, posterior fossa brainstem or cranial nerve compression. 4. In addition, some patients may also experience cataplexy, dyskinesia, sensory disturbance, ataxia, dizziness and other related symptoms, and occasionally have symptoms such as weakness of the contralateral limb and ipsilateral tongue muscles. 5. Patients with more serious illness may even have symptoms of brain stem and cerebellar infarction.

The current treatment mainly relies on neurointerventional therapy, and the interventional treatment plan depends on the position and size of the dissection and the shape of the dissecting aneurysm. If the shape of the dissecting aneurysm is better and the size is moderate, it can be treated with a stent method. Once the vertebral artery has a dissection, early diagnosis and treatment are necessary to avoid severe head pain, ischemic stroke, etc., and even affect normal life.

Here, experts urge everyone to choose appropriate relaxation and exercise methods in daily life, and pay attention to removing the predisposing factors of arterial dissection. If you experience head cramps, tingling or sudden severe headaches, or even limb weakness, slurred speech, darkening, vision loss, crooked mouth, double vision and other symptoms, you should seek medical attention immediately.
