ATP> Bresnik on Monfils: “Gaël had the reputation of disappearing and blending into the crowd for weeks. Nobody knew where he was then”

In an interview with the Austrian daily today, Gunter Bresnik, Gaël Monfils coach since the start of the 2021 season, returned to his collaboration with the Frenchman. And as often, the Austrian coach does not mince his words even if he seems to really appreciate “La Monf”.

“It works between us. I am the same age as his father. I have a fatherly friendship with him. We talk to each other on the phone every day. It means something. Gaël had the reputation of disappearing and blending in with the crowd for weeks. No one knew where he was then. A professional tennis player is not a pop singer: the performance is important, not the staging. With Gaël, we had an intensive training, we spent a lot of time in Switzerland to try to make him understand my message. I wanted him to see that the important thing is to win, I prefer him to win 7–6 in the third set playing against a blind man rather than losing after having put in a great performance. He had a lot of doubts, until he got back into tune during the American tour. He ended the year winning again and with a good feeling he rose from the dead. “
