Every year, IT security specialists remind us of the importance of choosing complex and different passwords for each account.

And every year, internet users don’t seem to listen to their advice by choosing … the same insecure passwords.
The cybersecurity firm NordPass has published the list of the 200 most common passwords in Canada in 2021.
The traditional “123456” and its variations as well as “password” still lead the list.
The use of first names seems popular since the 50 most popular passwords include the names “Tiffany”, “Charlie”, “Maggie”, “Michael”, “Matthew”, “Michelle”, “Andrew” , “Jennifer” or even “William”.
Canadians are also inspired by hobbies when it comes to choosing a password.
In the top 200, we find sports like “hockey”, “soccer”, “baseball”, “football” or “basketball”.
Words from movies or series can also be found there, including “pokemon”, “superman”, “dragon”, “starwars”, “batman”, “friends”, “snoopy” or “spiderman”.
