a website for Venezuelan baseball lovers

  • The website was created in 2009 and is recognized for being a historic baseball bank in Venezuela

Baseball, like other sports, is full of statistics, calculations, figures, and estimates. Currently having a tool to save and know all this set of numbers is important not only for followers and experts, but also for fans. There is a web page that stores all the data of the players and teams throughout the history of the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League. A site that has become a reference. Is named Binary Ball.

This web page was born in 2009, by the hand of José Montilla, a computer electrical engineer, who organized the site data after the LVBP published statistics from 1946 to 2005, but inserted in the baseball encyclopedia on a Compact Disc (CD ) and were in a PDF format.

Montilla classified, ordered and stored all the information on his computer. At first, he planned to use all this data for internal consumption. After sharing them with some friends on the Planeta Beisbol blog, it became popular. In September 2009 was when he finally opened a space for all lovers of Venezuelan baseball numbers.

Having this database is very important. My main motivation was to know if the narrators and commentators were telling the truth when they were talking about statistics. Also the importance that the page has generated for fans and the press, that for me is invaluable ”, said José Montilla exclusively for El Diario.

On the home page of the website you can get details of players who are having their birthday, both active and retired, and the table of positions for the current season of the LVBP. Also the leaders of the various offensive and pitching departments in the Venezuelan league. In addition, there is a search engine in which you can enter the name of any active or retired player and observe their statistics year after year. If you played in the Major Leagues there is also a link to find out those numbers.

Binary Ball also stores the lists of the Players of the Week in each season, the winners of the awards in each campaign and the Golden Gloves by position. There is also a line for the activity of Venezuelans in the Major Leagues in which you can search by date and know the activity of all the Creole players that day.

Montilla also tried, about 10 years ago, to create an online database on the Professional Basketball League (LPB), but commented that it is very difficult to obtain the data from the league. Although with the Super Basketball League, a tournament created in 2020, it has made a record in which you can know number by number all the details of this new competition that you can enter through this link: Super Liga And.

“I think Binary Ball is our Binary Ball, but it doesn’t bother me at all that people compare it to Baseball Reference., which is my north and the best that can exist in sports sites in the world ”, he assured.

A baseball reference

Stathead is an American website that groups together several sports such as baseball (Baseball Reference), basketball (Basketball Reference), hockey, American football and university disciplines that are a reference for journalists, experts and fans in terms of knowledge and handling of statistics.

The man behind the numbers

José Javier Montilla related that he is a sports lover like any other Venezuelan by inheritance from his family. He played basketball and was part of the Yaracuy team; Although he tried to play baseball, he was unsuccessful. He also stated that he is a fan of the Navegantes del Magallanes and Guaros de Lara in Venezuelan basketball.

Venezuelan baseball

“From that love for sport was born that affection for numbers and statistics, from the desire to know the history. I realized at some point that I was more interested in the history of the game, than in the game itself, ”explained the creator of Pelota Binaria.

Although the web has been a success, Montilla explained that he has never had an interest in selling it nor has the LVBP done so, although during Juan José Ávila’s leadership in the Venezuelan ball there were conversations to work together for a collection of data in the Caribbean Series. But Ávila resigned as president of the baseball league in 2019, after two years, and the Binary Ball project was not carried out.

During the pandemic he was working to add more data and games from previous seasons that he had found on the MLB.com page, but there was a change in the Major League page so he could not continue filling in that information.

For him, the greatest reward of having the web is that people take advantage of it. He believes that this gives an importance to the Venezuelan ball and also provides historical context to the LVBP.

“That is the biggest reward of the page because financially it does not give anything. Knowing that when I arrive at a stadium people know me, greet me with affection and thank me for my work. The press officers of the teams, for the most part, are waiting to collaborate with anything. That is my greatest satisfaction, feeling that I am part of the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League and that I am there making history, “he said.

Pelota Binaria became an illustrious reference in Venezuelan baseball in terms of numbers, statistics and history. It is a very helpful tool for sports connoisseurs and stores the records that will be used for future generations, leaving a precedent for the ball in Venezuela.
