Zwalpend Racing Genk takes a new blow from AA Gent | Jupiler Pro League 2021/2022

Racing Genk has completely lost its way. Against AA Gent, the Limburgers took another painful defeat – the fifth in a row, of which three in the competition. For the visitors, Samoise, Bezoes and Tissoudali scored. How much patience does Genk have with trainer John van den Brom?

Racing Genk – AA Gent in a nutshell:

  • Key moment: Before the break Genk got better and better in the game and just before half time Bolat even had to make one save after the other. Yet it is just then that Ghent opens the score on the counter and Genk would never recover from that.
  • Man of the match: Roman Bezoes stood up when Ghent needed him badly. At 0-1, he kept up with almost every ball, set up one attack after another and provoked the penalty which he also converted himself.
  • Remarkable: Genk that does not score in a competition match for its own people? That doesn’t happen very often. The last time was already in November 2019, when it lost 0-2 to … Gent.

Ghent survives Genk’s storm and strikes itself mercilessly

The duel between Genk and Ghent was one between a club in a downward spiral and one that is just crawling out of the valley. The midweek European duels emphasize this a bit, because Genk already lost in West Ham for the fourth consecutive time, while Ghent managed to win in Partizan Belgrade’s cauldron.

Genk and Gent started the match with an open visor, although that visor was not completely sharply adjusted. Nurio seemed to capitalize on Ghent’s strong start when he appeared in front of goalkeeper Vandevoordt. Only the young goalie pulled the longest straw.

On the other side, Genk was more threatening than dangerous. The tall Onuachu was well restrained, so the home team had to look for other end stations. They were eventually found in the person of Bongonda and Muñoz, but each time Bolat showed himself to be the better.

The closer the break came, the stronger Genk came up, but just then the moment had come for Ghent. In the counterattack, Samoise tapped the ball from the halfway line to Nurio to get him back on the edge of the box. A tap past Vandevoordt and a second tap to goal was enough for the young defender to set Ghent on roses before half time.

Genk is running after the ball and the facts, Ghent is in control

After the break, we had to look forward to Genk’s reaction, but it was Ghent that managed to deepen the lead before the hour. After an unfortunate foul by Lucumi, Bezoes put himself behind the self-provoked penalty. His first successful attempt had to be retaken, but he also aimed his second attempt without blinking against the nets.

Genk’s impotence was highlighted by an unfortunate Onoachu. Shortly after the 0-2, the Nigerian thought he would get a penalty himself, but he was flagged for offside and moments later he managed to wildly kick Ito’s cross for an empty goal. Ito himself was taken to the side not much later and the Genk supporters did not like that at all.

As if it wasn’t painful enough, Tissoudali sprinkled some more salt in the wound. After a tight pass from Depoitre, the Dutchman floored his attacker with a clever feint, after which he outwitted Vandevoordt with a blistering shot.

With the third goal in their pocket, Gent played out the game calmly and also an immature Genk counted down to the final whistle. Genk is already losing for the fifth time in a row, while Ghent continues its rise in the standings. Vanhaezebrouck and co jump even over Genk to 9th place in the ranking and are suddenly only 3 points from the top four.

  2. second half, minute 93. Ghent deals a sledgehammer blow! Gent leaves Genk with the full loot and pushes the home team a little deeper into the pit. It itself climbs further in the ranking and even just jumps over Genk. .
  3. Yellow card for Ilombe Mboyo of KAA Gent during the second half, minute 93
  4. second half, minute 92. Three minutes extra. And there’s only one left. Mboyo takes another stupid cardboard for kicking the ball away. .
  5. second half, minute 90. Norwegian get-together. Thorstvedt commits a frustration violation and then gets a push from Hanche-Olsen, his teammate with the national team. Lambrecht doesn’t seem to speak a word of Norwegian and let the two explain themselves. .
  6. second half, minute 87. Substitution at KAA Gent, Giorgi Chakvetadze in, Tarik Tissoudali out
  7. second half, minute 87. Substitution at KAA Gent, Ilombe Mboyo in, Laurent Depoitre out
  8. second half, minute 85. Countdown to the end. At Ghent they don’t take too many risks anymore, while Genk doesn’t seem to be able to hit back. So it is waiting for the final whistle. And that is still 5 minutes away. .
  9. Goal during the second half, minute 79 by Tarik Tissoudali of KAA Gent. 0, 3.
  10. second half, minute 79. Tissoudali does the books! Depoitre sends Tissoudali pretty deep on the left. He ridicules Sadick with a clever feint with the right, after which he brushed the ball past Vandevoordt with the left! .
  11. second half, minute 78. Substitution at KAA Gent, Vadis Odjidja Ofoe in, Julien De Sart out
  12. second half, minute 78. Bongonda seems to slip through the Ghent defence, but kicks full into the side net! He and two of his teammates were clearly offside. .

  15. second half, minute 77. Substitution at KRC Genk, Ángelo Preciado in, Bryan Heynen out
  16. second half, minute 76. We haven’t seen Depoitre in a while, but now that he’s been given plenty of time to dock, he’s showing a sign of life again. Not that that yields much, because his shot just keeps rising. .
  17. second half, minute 73. Substitution at KAA Gent, Elisha Owusu in, Sven Kums out
  18. second half, minute 72. De Sart remains down after a duel with Thorstvedt and he feels for the ankle. He was already having trouble with that ankle. In the meantime, Kums is substituted, who would also be struggling with a minor injury. .
  19. Yellow card for Michael Ngadeu-Ngadjui of KAA Gent during the second half, minute 70
  20. second half, minute 69. At Genk they can’t follow Bezoes. From the midfield, he once again shakes off Hrosovsky. In the back they continue to give way, so that Bezoes can also kick, although his shot goes well over a meter wide. .
