“We do not criticize him based on what he does on the ground but outside …” Thiago Silva defends Neymar

Thiago Silva, 37, the defender of Brazil and Chelsea, believes that critics have gone too far lately vis-à-vis Neymar, his compatriot and former teammate at PSG. The former Parisian central defender admits a small decrease in the level of play of his selection partner but is against the attacks which regularly exceeds the sporting framework.

Criticized in France, Neymar is not spared in the jersey of the Seleçao, thousands of kilometers from the capital. The Parisian striker was also targeted for his recent disappointing performance in Colombia (0-0) with Brazil. Other criticisms, extra-sporting ones, have arisen.

Reproaches have been addressed to Neymar for having removed his mask in order to take a photo with a young Colombian fan. On the air, a commentator also called the attacker an idiot, on the pretext that he left the field without greeting his opponents.

Inappropriate treatment according to Thiago Silva, the captain of the Seleçao, who supported the star on social networks, then at a press conference on Tuesday.

“It’s a very difficult situation,” recalls the former PSG defender. We know that we are under pressure from all sides but, there, it is a different pressure, it seems directed, personal. You seem to forget what he did on the field to focus on other things that are not interesting. ”

The London defender believes that Neymar is unfairly criticized, on his way of being more than on his performances.

“Regardless of the player, I think we need to be a little calmer in analyzing the situation,” continues Thiago Silva, who recognizes, however, that his teammate is not going through the best period of his career. But he expects more respect. “He knows that he does not play Neymar, he has this self-criticism,” he continues. But we don’t criticize him based on what he does on the pitch, but outside of it. There is a very strong demand for things that have nothing to do with it. ”

The former darling of the Parc des Princes compares Neymar’s situation to his a few years ago. “I had similar moments here, especially after the 2014 World Cup,” he recalls. I was called a crybaby, weak, very weak psychologically. It’s something that hurts you even though you know you aren’t. I hope Neymar will not lose this joy, that he remains as he is. He’s super special. And when he’s happy, he does what he always did: play well, win games, score. The happier he is, the better it is for our team. “
