Tomás Barrios achieves a solid victory to reach the semifinals of the Santiago 3 Challenger

There is no doubt that this season is the best in the career of Tomás Barrios (154th). A challenger title and two finals, in addition to qualifying for the round of 16 of an ATP, playing for the first time a Grand Slam at Wimbledon and an Olympic Games in Tokyo. All this in less than a year and with a great projection in his career. At 23, the chillanejo reached the semifinals of the Dove Men + Care Challenger in Santiago 3 and has already secured a place in 145th place on the planet.

This Friday night he gave a sign that he is reaching tennis maturity. With very good shots and ball speed, Guillermo Gómez’s pupil beat Peruvian Juan Pablo Varillas 6-3 and 6-4 (127th), who had just won the crown last weekend, also at the Palestinian Club.

The start was not easy, as the Lima broke in the third game. However, Barrios quickly recovered the break. The jolt did him good because he settled down more and more and was able to break in the next round of service, to go with enough authority to win the first set.

The second round was an extension of the first in terms of level. The national tennis player damaged a lot in the exchanges and it was not unusual that in the third game achieve a new break, something he repeated in the fifth. A little relaxation allowed Varillas to hold on to the game, but not enough to change his luck.

For the passage to the final, he will face Argentine Sebastián Báez (140 °), who won 6-3 and 6-4 over the first seed, his compatriot Juan Manuel Cerúndolo (103rd). The duel between the Chilean and the trans-Andean has a history, as the trans-Andean won the final of the Challenger in Santiago 1, so Barrios goes in search of his revenge, at 7:00 p.m. this Saturday.
