KOMPAS.com – The head coach of the Danish badminton team, Kenneth Jonassen, praised Indonesia’s performance in the semifinals of the 2020 Thomas Cup men’s team championship.

Denmark faced Indonesia in the last four of the 2020 Thomas Cup which took place at Ceres Arena, Aarhus, Denmark, Saturday (16/10/2021) night WIB.

The Danish men’s badminton team had to give up their dream of going to the final after losing 1-3 to Indonesia.

Denmark actually won 1-0 first thanks to Viktor Axelsen’s men’s singles victory over Anthony Sinisuka Ginting.

However, Indonesia equalized through the actions of Marcus Fernaldi Gideon/Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo who beat Kim Astrup/Anders Skaarup Rasmussen.

Indonesia then turned 2-1 ahead after Jonathan Christie beat Anders Antonsen in a three-game battle.

Fajar Alfian/Muhammad Rian Ardianto’s victory over Mathias Christiansen/Frederik Sogaard then ensured Indonesia won 3-1 and advanced to the final.

After the match, Kenneth Jonassen expressed his disappointment for failing to bring his team to the final.

“Disappointed is the main feeling I feel right now,” said Kenneth Jonassen in a video uploaded to the Badminton Europe YouTube account.

“We believe we will be able to reach the final. However, when we look at the draw, we also know that against Indonesia will be a very difficult match,” said the coach who is also a former badminton player.

However, Kenneth Jonassen “takes off his hat” aka praised the performance of the Indonesian team.

He appreciated Anthony Sinisuka Ginting et al who were able to cope with pressure. This is not an easy thing to do considering that Ceres Arena is full of Danish supporters.

“I have to give my appreciation to the Indonesian team. They appear here, which is full of supporters of the Danish players,” he said.

“It’s a good win for them, showing the depth of the Indonesian squad, and how they can handle the pressure. We lost to a better opponent today (yesterday),” said Kenneth Jonassen.

In the 2020 Thomas Cup final, Indonesia will face China, who advanced to the top party after beating Japan with a score of 3-1.

The Indonesia vs China match will also take place at Ceres Arena, Aarhus, Denmark, Sunday (17/10/2021) at 18.00 WIB.
