Herry Iman Pierngadi got a crushing blow when Indonesia’s men’s doubles failed to win a medal at the Olympics. He then succeeded in responding by contributing greatly to winning Thomas Cup.
“Failure and success are part of life. Both are temporary, life goes on, thoughts that are fixed on problems, will make us fall. But thinking about the future, we will be strong.”
The sentence was uploaded by Herry IP after the 2020 Olympics ended on August 2. Indonesia has the top two seeds, Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo/Marcus Fernaldi Gideon and Mohammad Ahsan/Hendra Setiawan but there are no medals to take home.
The pressure for the men’s doubles was even greater after in the Sudirman Cup, Kevin/Marcus’ appearance was anti-climax and they lost the duel against Malaysia.
The disappointments at the Olympics plus the Sudirman Cup were the injuries that Herry IP brought to the 2020 Thomas Cup.
On paper, the Indonesian men’s doubles number is the main backbone to realize the championship title. The ranking position of the doubles players which is higher than the singles players in Indonesia makes Indonesia’s doubles numbers always go down with the obligation to get two points in hand.
The target of two points in each match was then re-instilled by Herry IP in the men’s doubles team in Aarhus, Denmark.
Herry IP also stated that pair reshuffle was an option he could do.
Then what happened later, a week after the Thomas Cup was held, was Herry IP’s performance regarding the mix and determination of the pair.
During the first match against Algeria, Herry IP decided to field Mohammad Ahsan/Hendra Setiawan and Leo Rolly Carnando/Daniel Marthin. The two doubles who were trusted to go down managed to carry out their duties well.
