FRISCO — The MRI study of offensive tackle Tyron Smith was “favorable,” the Cowboys reported Friday, but his exact situation heading into Sunday’s game against the Patriots in New England is still unknown.
Smith came out of training Thursday with a sore neck, which underwent surgery last year and caused him to only participate in two games all season.
Head coach Mike McCarthy said they were optimistic and just wanted to exercise caution given Smith’s history of neck ailments over the past four years.
Smith, who was placed in the official team report as “questionable” has played as a starter at left tackle the first five games of the season, in which he has reiterated even before starting practice camp that he felt perfect. neck and back, where most of his physical problems have come from in his 11 NFL seasons.
Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones also said he was optimistic about Smith’s involvement against the Patriots.
TREVON DIGGS IS “QUESTIONABLE”
The Cowboys’ physical problems do not end with Tyron Smith: The participation of cornerback Trevon Diggs in New England will be a game day decision due to the ankle injury he has dragged from the previous game, the team reported.
Diggs, the NFL leader in interceptions with six, only trained on Friday and very limited, after missing practices on Wednesday and Thursday. It was listed as “questionable” in the last report of the week the Cowboys sent to the league.
Coach Mike McCarthy said Diggs will remain in treatment even Saturday, when they will hold light practice before flying to New England.
Safety Donovan Smith was listed on the Cowboys’ official report as “questionable” after he missed the first five games of the season with a groin injury, which he suffered days before the opener.
Running back Ezekiel Elliott (ribs), defensive end Randy Gregory (knee) and safety Damontae Kazee (hip) are also listed as “questionable.”
PATRIOTS HAVE THEIR OWN INJURIES
The New England Patriots have already ruled out right guard Shaq Mason due to abdominal problems, so it will be Ted Karras, who will have to start the game for the second consecutive week; this time against the Cowboys.
Cornerback Shaun Wade (shock) was also officially out, according to the Patirots’ latest official practice report of the week.
The Patriots listed eight as “questionable” to face Dallas: Running backs Damien Harris (ribs) and JJ Taylor (groin): offensive tackle Justin Herron (abs); kicker Nick Folk; cornerback Jonathan Jones (ankle); safety Jalen Mills (hamstring); linebacker Ronnie Perkins (ankle), and linebacker Kyle Van Noy (groin).
