The double bet of Balearic women’s basketball

Sant Josep and Asnimo Agora Portals put the Mallorcan accent on the third category of national basketball, the Women’s League 2, which presents demanding challenges and different objectives for the island representatives. While Álex Requeni’s team looks up and points to the promotion playoffs, Jordi Fernández’s team is clear that permanence is their goal in their debut season in a league that is very open and that has not exactly had a start promising for islanders.

“The only objective is permanence and it will be very difficult,” says Asnimo Ágora Portals coach, Jordi Fernández, who once again directs in categories of the Spanish Basketball Federation (FEB) after forging a curriculum of many carats in his time at the PDF, the Perfumerías Avenida or the Ros Casares, among others.

His intention is for the new project to identify the same hallmarks that he has always instilled in his previous teams. “What we want is to create a cheerful basketball with a good defense to run on the counterattack and with many transitions,” explains the Catalan coach, who is betting on this route given the possible inferiority of centimeters and kilos in the paint compared to other teams in the league.

Jordi Fernández will direct the steps of Asnimo Agora Portals in their irruption in the Women’s League 2.

With a base of Majorcan players and a good part of them coming from Andratx who played last season in the league, Asnimo Ágora Portals wants to adapt as soon as possible to the demand of a competition in which they will coexist with Sant Josep, with whom they maintain a good relationship. Jordi Fernández celebrates the notable island representation in Women’s League 2 although he does not hide the possible convenience of betting on a unique project.

There were talks to unify the structures of Sant Josep and Andratx, but they did not come to fruition and the whole of Ciutat maintained its commitment to rub shoulders with the elite. Last year they were on the verge of fighting for promotion and in the Palma entity they trust that the accumulated experience will bring them closer to the teams called to fight for privileged positions.

The continuity in the squad and on the bench with Álex Requeni at the head of the operations define the new plan. “The league puts you where you are, but our ambition is to get into the playoffs if injuries respect us,” explains the Mallorcan coach, although for the moment physical problems have conditioned his start to the season after Amina Markovic’s serious injury.

Sant Josep, which has the promising Argentine base Milagros Maza in its ranks, will demonstrate the hallmark of the house. “Our philosophy is the same as Sant Josep’s: starting with a good defense, attacking quickly,” says Requeni, who confesses himself “a privileged person” due to the working conditions provided by the club and the human group that has been formed.

The initial balance has not been as desired, but the island squad trusts in the ability of its squad to progress to gradually try to return Mallorcan basketball to the highest levels of the national women’s scene.
