Texas teams could be boycotted by athletes after restrictive abortion laws

Sports franchises taken hostage

This protest movement, which therefore aims to take sports franchises hostage, follows several bills from Republican Governor Gregg Abbott, in particular the one concerning abortion. A law denounced as very restrictive by Democratic opponents and which prohibits abortion when the embryo’s heartbeat has been detected (after about six weeks of pregnancy). The law also does not provide for an exception when the pregnancy results from rape or incest.

Gregg Abbott announced in mid-October that he was banning all entities in his state, including private companies, from imposing a vaccine requirement on their employees or consumers. The elected official also promulgated a bill on Monday banning transgender girls from participating in women’s sports in public schools.
