Tennis player Andrea Petkovic initially fights her way back into the game against Latvian Jelena Ostapenko and then benefits from the abandonment of her opponent.

Andrea Petkovic reached the round of 16 at the WTA tournament in Moscow. The 34-year-old from Darmstadt won her first round match after her opponent Jelena Ostapenko from Latvia gave up. The former French Open winner Ostapenko gave up at 6: 2, 0: 6 and 0: 2 from her point of view.

After losing the first set in 39 minutes, Petkovic fought his way back and started directly with a break in the second set. As a result, her opponent took her first medical break. She tried again, but gave up in the third sentence.

Only German starter

In the second round, Petkovic will meet number nine seeded Anett Kontaveit from Estonia. She is the only German main field participant, because Angelique Kerber had to cancel her participation at short notice due to an illness. The tournament in the Russian capital is endowed with 565,530 US dollars.

At the Masters in Indian Wells at the beginning of October, Petkovic had lost her first round match against the Kazakh Julia Putinzewa. Ostapenko had advanced to the semifinals in Indian Wells.
