Sports is just a bit different with Pauline

By Dione Lam

After the Paralympic games, I became curious about how disabled sports work. In this series I will visit different sports in Apeldoorn for 10 weeks. Not just any sport, but for people with disabilities. I was very surprised that there was so much on offer in sports for people with a disability. How does it feel for people to be able to exercise, and what do they think about it? I’m going to investigate that. Today I take a look at Pauline.

Tell us, what do we need to know about you?

“I’m Pauline and I’m from Brazil, hence my Brazilian shirt. That’s my homeland! I have something in my head that makes it difficult for me to place things. When someone tells me something, I find it difficult to understand and so I often ask if that person can repeat it. I sometimes find that very difficult. Also my feet are both inwards. My mother always says: “If that really makes it too much, then you should stop exercising.” I also state that myself. I also have a lot of earache now, I have a twist in my ear. That probably needs surgery. I find that exciting, such an operation.”

To play sports

“This is a very fun sport, you can also learn a lot. How to hold your racket, play with each other, play a game. I got the idea to play badminton because of my guidance. I went to have a look first and liked it right away. I just wanted to do something more than just sitting at home in front of the television, because then I get bored quickly. I dance too! I do different dances. I also draw and I make beautiful drawings, dolls, flowers and butterflies.”

Nice team

“I also live in my residential group with people from this team. My guidance is also there with every training, if there is something then something they can help! It’s just really cozy here. I get along with everyone. Sometimes we go cycling and in the garden we all go outside to play. This really is a sport for everyone. Some don’t like the sport, but if you’re doing nothing at home, this is ideal.”
