Canadian player Richie Laryea described what happened in his team’s last game which ended in a win of 4 to 1 ahead of Panama in a qualifying match for the 2022 World Cup. He confirmed having been spit on by a rival late in the game.

Laryea was on the verge of a sideline handover when rival Edgar Barcenas approached and sent the ball towards the Canadian before retreating.

Suddenly, Laryea dropped the ball with her hands in the air. Several fans nearby at BMO Field jumped up from their seats to yell at the referee. Afterwards, Laryea informed that he had been spit on.

“I grabbed the ball and was about to throw it when the guy spat at me,” he mentioned to TSN, Friday. I know a few fans saw him because they got up from their seats to yell at the ref. “

“It’s obviously something you don’t want to see in a game. I know there is frustration on their side after leading 1-0 and losing 4-1. I understand, but there is no room to spit on someone, ”added Laryea.

Officials let him know that he had not seen the gesture. Both teams found themselves involved in a scrimmage at the final whistle following these events.
