PGA: Hideki Matsuyama wins Zozo Championship

CHIBA, Japan – Defending Masters Tournament champion Hideki Matsuyama had three birdies in five holes on the returning nine, in addition to adding an eagle on the 18th green, to win the Zozo Championship by five strokes on Sunday .

It was Matsuyama’s first victory at home on the PGA Tour, although he had only appeared in one tournament in Japan before. In 2019, Tiger Woods won the first Zozo Championship, the first official PGA tournament to be held in Japan, and last year’s competition was moved to California due to the coronavirus pandemic and travel restrictions. .

Matsuyama handed over a final card of 65 for a cumulative score of under-15 (265) at Narashino Country Club. It was his seventh career victory on the PGA Tour.

Two American golfers finished second at minus-10: Brendan Steele played 66, and Cameron Tringale 69.

Mackenzie Hughes of Hamilton, Ont., Followed in fourth at minus-6, having completed his final round in 67 strokes.

Defending British Open champion Collin Morikawa played 69 in the final round to result in 10 shots from Matsuyama.

Tokyo Olympics gold medalist Xander ScHotele handed a 68 card and finished tied for par for the tournament, while compatriot Rickie Fowler of the United States recorded a second straight round of 71 to get plus-3.

For his part, Roger Sloan of Calgary required 73 strokes to complete the final round. The Canadian finished in 71st position, plus-10.

It was the only stopover on the PGA Tour in Asia this season, and only three of the top 20 golfers in the world took part.
