Paul McGinley’s solutions to prepare European players for the Ryder Cup

Asked about the large defeat of the Europeans in the Ryder Cup, the Irishman hopes that the board of the European Tour will put in place the necessary actions to avoid a new European debacle in Italy in 2 years.

Former captain who won in 2014 at Gleneagles, Paul McGinley even experienced the ecstasy of being the one who gave victory to Europe when he returned the decisive putt in 2002 on the green of 18 Belfry.

Asked to give his opinion on the resounding American victory of last month, the Irishman stressed that it had taken 4 or 5 years for the USA to get back into working order with the establishment of a “Task Force”. However, he hopes that it will take less time for Europe to question itself and wants us to bet on players of the future.

“The main thing, above all, is to give opportunities and let our young players grow. I am thinking in particular of Robert MacIntyre. We need to make sure Bob has the support he needs. He is very European. He is very Scottish. It is this DNA that generally makes great Ryder Cup players. We don’t want to avoid losing it. We don’t want him to become a PGA Tour player. It must be very focused on Europe. ”

The return of the Seve Trophy?

“These players need support, they need structures, they need help to prepare to be up to the challenge, meaning to feel like a Ryder Cup player in two years.”

McGinley in particular strongly believes that the reintroduction of a team event in the non-Ryder Cup years should be considered. The last edition of the Seve Trophy between players from Continental Europe and representatives of Great Britain and Ireland took place in 2013 in Saint-Nom-la-Bretèche.

The Irishman also stressed the idea that one should not overreact to this defeat and remember that in 2018, 3 years ago, Europe taught the Americans a lesson at the National Golf in Paris.
