NFL: Matt Wright hits drive Josh Lambo out of Jacksonville

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville Jaguars fired veteran kicker Josh Lambo two days after Matt Wright’s two 50-plus field goals late in the game in a win over the Miami Dolphins that ended the longest streak in NFL defeats in 44 years.

Lambo, the league’s most efficient kicker between 2017 and 2020, has not been sent into the fray in the last three games as he struggled with confidence issues.

The Jaguars (1-5) are to shoulder the remainder of Lambo’s $ 3.5 million salary in 2021, a deal that likely includes a clause that would allow the team to recoup some of the amount if they sign elsewhere.

Lambo missed five kicks in the Jaguars’ first three games: three field goals and two conversions. He was sidelined for 12 games last year with a hip injury that required surgery, but he claimed heading into the first week of the season that he was more confident than never despite missed kicks in training camp and in preseason games.

But his many failures have apparently left their mark on Lambo, who declined recent interview requests.

Given Lambo’s unavailability, the Jaguars turned to Wright. A native of Pennsylvania and nicknamed “Matty Ice” during his college career in Central Florida, Wright has made six of his seven conversions and three of his four field goals.
