Twitter and Instagram social media users responded with various tweets and comments after the red and white flag could not fly when Indonesia won Thomas Cup 2020 (2021).
Indonesia is confirmed to be the champion of the Thomas Cup and won the gold medal after defeating China 3-0 in the final which was held at Ceres Arena, Aarhus, Denmark, Sunday (17/10) night WIB.
Indonesia opened victory over China through the men’s singles, Anthony Sinisuka Ginting, who beat Lu Guang Zu with a score of 18-21, 21-14, and 21-16.
Indonesia won the second victory through the men’s doubles Fajar Alfian / Muhammad Rian Ardianto. Fajar/Rian successfully beat the Chinese pair with two straight games 21-12 and 21-19.
The Indonesian contingent finally managed to secure a 3-0 victory over China and won the 2020 Thomas Cup (Thomas Cup 2021) through Jonatan Christie’s success in defeating Li Shi Feng with a score of 21-14, 18-21, 21-14.
Unfortunately, the celebration of the 2020 Thomas Cup winner at Ceres Arena felt very different because the Indonesian contingent could not fly the Red and White flag which had to be replaced with a flag bearing the All Indonesia Badminton Association (PBSI) logo.
Indonesia is prohibited from using the Red and White flag related to the punishment from the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) due to Indonesia’s non-compliance in the doping test program.
The ban on flying the state flag is one of the sanctions for ignoring the WADA program.
However, the national anthem of Indonesia Raya can still be sung in the Indonesian celebration of the Thomas Cup.
Twitter and Instagram social media users responded with various tweets after the red and white flag could not fly when Indonesia celebrated the 2020 Thomas Cup (2021) winner.
The Twitter account @AREAJULID admitted that it was sad that the red and white flag could not fly on the Thomas Cup champion podium.
“Dis! Indonesia managed to bring home the Thomas Cup again after 19 years. But it’s really sad that it’s not the red and white flag that is flying, but the PBSI flag. Is PBSI a country?,” wrote @areajulid.
Then, the Twitter account @Fadli1195 admitted that there were joys and sorrows felt by the Indonesian public at the end of the Thomas Cup.
“There are joys and sorrows, it is joy that the Thomas Cup returns to Indonesia and the anthem Indonesia Raya plays in Aarhus. Unfortunately, the Indonesian flag is not displayed, the PBSI logo has been replaced,” wrote @Fadli1195.
Meanwhile, the Twitter account @AgusMagelangan assessed that the celebration of the Thomas Cup champion made both happy and angry.
“A scene that makes both happy and angry. Indonesia won the Thomas Cup, but when awarding the title, the Indonesian flag should not be displayed and must be replaced with the PBSI flag,” wrote @AgusMagelangan.
In addition, netizens who protested about the Red and White flag also flooded the Kemenpora Instagram comment column when uploading photos of congratulations for the Indonesian badminton team.

“What is the problem with WADA, sir? Has it been handled,” wrote an IG account named Niken Meigawati in the Kemenpora Instagram comment column.
“Take care of WADA sanctions, wow, how can I not fly the flag, I’m dizzy,” wrote an account named Ilhamudin Ahmad
“The red and white flag doesn’t fly, right?,” said an account named Restu Eka Septianti.
