Ethis year, a card supposedly signed by Luka Doncic was sold for a staggering $ 4.6 million. However, The New York Times has published an extensive article in which the authenticity of the signature of the point guard of the Mavericks is doubted on some stickers. The world of collectors, booming after the pandemic, is agitated by the possibility that pieces of such a sought-after player do not really have a rubric made by his hand.

Comparing some cards shows an obvious change in Doncic’s signature. In some firms as Luka and in others as Lulu. Writing can change with the passage of time and stars like Michael Jordan and Patrick Mahomes they modified their signatures to simplify them in view of the demand they had. But some collectors are baffled by this mystery. They traced the base’s signature, though it is practically impossible to prove who wrote on a card.

Conspiracy theories suggest that she may have been the player’s mother, Mirjam Poterbin, who calls the accusation “crazy rumor. I don’t even know how people can say things like this. He’s probably changing his writing, I don’t know. I dont know”, she defends herself while Doncic has not wanted to comment on the matter.

If it’s not playing, it’s a burden

His manager, Bill Duffy, blames it on the stress caused by everything other than playing basketball.. The point guard spends a lot of time signing autographs for fans, but he must do it at high speed and it is impossible to repeat the same rubric every time. “He cares about one thing and one thing only, and that is winning. Frankly, everything else is a burden,” says the agent. At the beginning of the season, players often spend hours signing different products and it is said that Doncic could have signed at least 10,000 autographs in his rookie year alone.

Those who defend that Lulu is Doncic refer to a gift that you gave to the President of Slovenia and on which that signature appears. But three expert calligraphers with no ties to the sports industry could not agree on the authenticity of the signatures. One said that no determination could be made. Another, that it was unlikely that the same person wrote them. And the third, that the signatures were generally consistent. What everyone agreed on is that the autograph is very easy to forge.
