The Colchoneros are not in the best shape of their existence, to say the least. Diego Simeone’s men were hooked by Levante this Thursday evening, after Enis Bardhi’s double from a penalty spot (2-2). Antoine Griezmann’s opening scoring, his first goal in La Liga since his return to the Spanish capital, shortly before the quarter of an hour of play, was not enough. After 10 contested La Liga games, the Madrilenians point to 6th place in the Spanish championship.
The deliverance for Griezmann, finally
With just one victory in their last 4 games in all competitions, the reigning Spanish champions were expected at the turn in Valencia, hosted by Levante UD. A handful of minutes after kick-off, João Félix, well served by Hector Herrera, put Aitor Fernández to work but the goalkeeper trained at Athletic Bilbao captured the leather well (5th). Shortly before the quarter of an hour of play, Atlético found the opening: on a corner hit by Antoine Griezmann badly pushed back, the French international with 100 selections took advantage of a long mess to arrive and score with a header from the surface (0-1, 12th).
Legitimate joy shared with the collective by the native of Mâcon, who therefore scored his very first goal in La Liga since his return to the capital of Madrid. While Javier Pereira’s men were not very dangerous, a clumsy intervention by Luis Suárez on Ruben Vezo in the 16-meter rojiblancos gave the home team a penalty. Penalty scored with mastery by the Macedonian playing master Enis Bardhi, also for his first goal in La Liga this season (1-1, 37th).
Matheus Cunha’s awakening was not enough
Faced with the Granotes de Levante still so technically borrowed, the men of “Cholo” Simeone continued to push. They therefore took the advantage deservedly via Matheus Cunha, served against goal by Rodrigo De Paul after a devastating breakthrough by the Argentina international (1-2, 76th). The Brazilian striker’s first goal in the Atlético jersey could have been that of victory. That was not the case.
After a not very obvious hand, in the box, from Renan Lodi sanctioned by the referee after long seconds of viewing, Bardhi equalized from the penalty spot and signed a double in the last seconds of regulation time (2-2, 90th). The 8 minutes of additional time granted did not change anything: the teammates of Thomas Lemar and Antoine Griezmann continue to doubt. However, they will quickly have to shake themselves up: on Sunday, they host Nabil Fekir’s Real Betis, who have won 5 of their last 6 La Liga games.
