Kums brings AA Gent a step closer to European wintering | UEFA Europa Conference League 2021/2022

AA Gent has taken a big step in its ambition to spend the winter in Europe. It won the game on the field of co-leader Partizan Belgrade and now remains the only one with 9 out of 9 in Group B of the Conference League. Sven Kums scored the only goal on the hour, at the end it was just as exciting against a team that barely lost this season.

Partizan Belgrade – KAA Gent in a nutshell:

  • Man of the Match: Ghent with or without its captain is a world of difference. Vadis Odjidja returned to the starting line-up for the first time since his injury and thanked him with a strong performance. Both offensively and defensively, the midfielder did more than his job.
  • Key moment: A few minutes before time, Partizan defender Vujacic decides to put in a shot. The Montenegrin unpacks with a huge buck, but finds Bolat and the crossbar in his way. No equalizer for the home team, but 3 points for Ghent.
  • Remarkable: Before this match, Partizan had an impressive winning streak of 12 games in a row (across all competitions). With the 0-1 victory in Belgrade, Ghent immediately put an end to that impressive statistic.

Dominant Ghent cannot cash in possession

In an atmospheric Partizan stadium, the visitors, led by Odjidja, immediately took control of the match. After a nice one-two with Depoitre, the Ghent captain was knocked down in the sixteen. No penalty, but yellow for a schwalbe. A strange decision from Referee Madden.

Gent continued to control the match, but for a long time it was not possible to score real goal opportunities together. When Depoitre was brought into position by Chakvetadze after 20 minutes, the Belgian striker aimed his attempt high over Popovic’s goal.

Partizan lurked on the counter and after Okumu’s stupid loss of possession it was almost 1-0 not much later. Gomes tried with a low slider, but the Cape Verde goal thief eventually saw his shot just wide.

Kums breaks the spell, equalizer explodes on the crossbar

Driven by the singing home fans, Partizan came out of the dressing room better. Still, the first real chance was for Ghent, but Chakvetadze sent the ball face to face with Popovic into the stands.

A huge miss, but on the hour it was hit for the visitors. After Popovic first kept Odjidja nice from the 0-1, it was Sven Kums who headed the opening goal against the net on a pass from Samoise.

Gent now pushed the accelerator pedal all the way down, but twice found Popovic on his way. Odjidja saw a great free kick being removed from under the bar in the end, after which Nurio also did not get past the Serbian goalkeeper at the 2nd post.

Partizan kept hoping for the equalizer and a few minutes before the end it also seemed to fall. Vujacic sent a cruise missile from about 35 meters, but saw the 1-1 explode on the crossbar via a finger from Bolat.

Gent thus books a 9 out of 9 and is alone in the lead in its group. The men of coach Hein Vanhaezebrouck can no longer escape during the European winter.

Kums: “Cash in on this win in 2 weeks”

Sven Kums: “We are very satisfied, because we wanted to achieve a result here. Of course it was not always nice, also partly because of the field. Today the victory was simply the most important. Now we have to cash in on this victory at home. So within two weeks we have to full to the brim.”

Vadis Odjidja: “It was a game with a lot of struggle. We were very good in the game and we were the best team. At the end of the game they still come up dangerously, but in general we were the most dangerous. I think it is a well deserved win.”
