Kan Judo 36 years of history and great successes

The Olbia club of maestro Calvisi has resumed activity: “Many limitations, but happy to be back”

OLBIA. The historian Kan Judo Olbia, directed by the teacher and president Angelo Calvisi (5th dan), celebrates the 36th year of activity. After last year’s stop for, via del Covid, «which forced us to stop for 14 months with the complete closure of the gym (second forced stop after the tragic flood in 2013), we finally leave. We would have liked to celebrate the finish in a different way, given that our club is one of the most important martial arts clubs in Sardinia, one of the longest-running in the north of the island and with the most registered judo athletes, but that’s okay ».

History. Kan Judo Olbia was born in 1985, thanks to the master Salvatore Degortes. Then, in 1991, the association passed into the hands of Angelo Calvisi (he too celebrates 50 years of uninterrupted judo activity), athlete and pupil of master Degortes who after a short time retired from the activity, leaving the city with a great wealth of experience. .

Judo in action. In 1997 the turning point: after an absence of about 12 years a great judo event returns to Olbia. LO is organized by Maestro Calvisi with his staff in collaboration with the Municipality and various sponsors. Thus began the era of “Judo in action international trophy”, in which athletes from various nations participate. At the time 56 clubs with 412 athletes participated and it was a real record.

The other events. But the city ranks among the top regional judo locations thanks also to 4 other events of different technical and competitive style organized from the 90s onwards: the Baby Ippon Trophy and 3 experimental events never held before in Sardinia: the “No limits Master Trophy », The” Trofeo ne waza “(ground fight) and the” Trofeo kata la forma “. Overall, Kan Judo Olbia boasts 58 events of various levels organized in the city at the Paladeiana del Fausto Noce (temporarily out of use): “A record of continuity and seriousness – specifies the master Calvisi – with the aim of making Olbia a point of reference sports for judo events ».

The results. Many successes at individual and team level obtained by Kan Judo athletes on the island, in the rest of Italy and abroad. «Athletes always and only coming from the vast youth nursery – adds Calvisi – which involves children from 4 years old. Then we go on with a work done individually and we arrive at the selections for the technical, pre-competitive and competitive activities. The current one is a particular period for gyms and contact sports and we are all familiar with the problems concerning anti-Covid procedures, which penalize us slightly in certain work aspects. However, there is a lot of optimism on my part and on the part of the technical staff composed of Gavino Carta (4th dan), Salvatore Calvisi (2nd dan) and Federica Calvisi (1st dan) ».

The restart. “But even if the protocols related to the pandemic and the guidelines of the Federation do not allow us for the moment to continue the projects with schools and organize promotional events – Calvisi closes – we are still happy to have resumed business since September and to have found on the mat our “old athletes” but also the many and numerous new members (about ninety) who couldn’t wait to resume training ».
