Saturday evening the important home game against Roostere BC was scheduled for Team1 of VELO. With a final score of 5-3, partly thanks to a win in all doubles, the team from Wateringen retains its 4th place in the fight for the championship group.
Nick Fransman and Jim Middelburg started the match and won in 2 sets against Noah Jongen and Rick Steuten. On the adjacent track, the ladies Myke Halkema and Milou Lugters beat themselves to a simple 21-13 and 21-11 with tactical play. Intermediate score 2-0.
Singers Dion Rovers, Frederika Lagerstedt and Hanna Couwenhoven, however, lost their match, despite the ladies both managed to come back very well in a three-setter. VELO’s leader Nick Fransman kept his cool and managed to beat his opponent Rick Steuten with clear numbers 21-12 and 21-12. So with 3-3 on the scoreboard, there was a lot of pressure on the mixes to take the win. After a good start from Anne and Noah, Myke and Jim were able to adjust their game and the experienced couple took the win 21-16 and 21-12. The final mix of Russell Muns and Milou Lugters was decisive for the victory. With a rough start, they lost the first set 19-21. But they recovered and won a strong 2nd set 21-11. The tension of the match returned in the third set. The couples went straight and this ended in a blood-curdling denouement of the last mix. Having already lost a match point, Russell and Milou still won the match and Team1 took the win.
‘The victory is hard fought and good for our goal to reach the championship group. Still, it leaves a bitter aftertaste because we wanted to get more out of it.” – Franklin Telwin, Head Coach
With a 5-3 win, VELO managed to maintain fourth place in the league rankings. After the exciting game against Roosterse BC, the team has two weeks of rest, after which the battle for the championship pool will resume on October 30 with an away game against Smashing from Wijchen.
