Hiddink: ‘Would have really let Ziyech play against Latvia, my last international match’

Hakim Ziyech was very close to making his debut for the Dutch national team in 2015. The then national coach Guus Hiddink planned to field the 28-year-old attacking midfielder from Chelsea, but an injury threw a spanner in the works.

“I really let Ziyech play against Latvia, my last international match,” Hiddink told the General Newspaper. “But he was injured in the run-up. He seemed to me a boy who feels whether something is sincere. You don’t have to tell him that you have him high, he must feel that. It’s a shame, he really could have played for Orange. “

It turned out differently in the end. Hiddink’s successor Danny Blind initially ignored Ziyech, after which the former player of sc Heerenveen, FC Twente and Ajax opted for an international career with Morocco. By the way, the playmaker is currently not coming out either the Lions of the Atlas, because he is at odds with national coach Vahid Halilhodzic.
