Hertha mourns Levent Selim, who died suddenly at the age of 48. The club and many players shared their condolences on various social channels on Wednesday evening.
Selim worked from July 2020 to August 2021 as an assistant coach for Hertha’s U23 team in the Regionalliga (4th division). In mid-April 2021, Selim even helped out for a day as an assistant coach at the Hertha professionals. At that time, sports director Arne Friedrich had to step in as head coach at short notice (after Hertha’s entire coaching team around Pal Dardai, Zecke Neuendorf, and Admir Hamzagic had to go into corona quarantine) – and promoted Selim and Malik Fathi as reinforcements from the U23 to the Bundesliga -Team.

After Selim resigned from Hertha in August 2021, he is said to have last traveled to Turkey during the autumn break. There – it is said – Selim is said to have contracted a corona infection with a very bad course.

Hertha’s U23 coach Ante Covic, who was still working with Selim in the summer, says in shock: “We are all shaken here and incredibly affected. Our thoughts are with his family.”
At Hertha, Selim had a close friendship with Zecke Neuendorf (currently assistant coach at Hertha’s professionals). In the summer of 2020 Neuendorf – at that time still coach of the U23 – brought Selim as his assistant coach to Hertha’s U23. The duo Neuendorf / Selim had previously made it to the Berlin League with BFC Preussen in the 2014/15 season.
Prussia’s sporting director Pierre Seiffert remembers: “Levo was the promotion coaching team with Tick. We had a lot of fun and success together. Later, in 2016, he trained our first men’s team alone and brought us to the cup final. He was a spectator at many of our games right up to the end. It is very sad that he left us much too early at the age of 48. “
