Last May, Garpenlev took over the position of head coach of the Swedish hockey team from Richard Greenborough. Prior to that, he worked for three years as an assistant to Greenborough.

Under his leadership, Sweden remained ninth at this year’s World Championships in Riga, holding one of the most unsuccessful championships in the history of the national team. Sweden will be one of the opponents of the Latvian national team at the 2022 Olympic Games and the World Championship.

During his hockey career, Garpenlev became a world champion in 1991 and 1992. He is also a three-time Swedish champion, but began his career in the National Hockey League (NHL) in 1990 with Detroit’s Red Wings team, then moved to San Jose’s Sharks team, where he was a member of the Arthur Irbe and Sands Ozolins team.

Garpenlev ended his career in 2001, after which he became a coach. For the first time in his job as head coach, he only worked for the Swedish national team.
