The Briton managed to at least minimize the damage of the 10-place grid penalty for his engine change on Friday, while his great rival for the world title, Max Verstappen, will start second

Lewis Hamilton achieved pole position in the Formula 1 Turkish Grand Prix but it will be his Mercedes teammate, Valtteri Bottas, who will start from the first position this Sunday ahead of Max Verstappen (Red Bull), second in the Formula 1 World Championship, while that the current leader, Hamilton, will be eleventh on the grid by suspension.

In qualifying this Saturday, Hamilton set the best time, even setting the Istanbul Park circuit record on a wet track. But the Briton has a ten-place penalty on the grid for an engine change on Friday that exceeds the authorized limit per season.

By starting from the best possible position despite his suspension, Hamilton has a chance to make up ground and fight for victory in the 16th race of 22 this season. At the moment, only two points separate the British from the Dutch before the last third of the championship.

In the second row will be the Monegasque Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) and the French Pierre Gasly (AlphaTauri). Spanish veteran Fernando Alonso (Alpine) finished fifth and Mexican Sergio Pérez (Red Bull) sixth.

Last year in Turkey, on an equally rainy weekend, Hamilton won his seventh world title, equaling Michael Schumacher’s record.
