Grosjean will receive a skin graft in November: ‘But it will never be perfect’

Romain Grosjean’s left hand still hasn’t fully recovered from his horror crash in Bahrain a year ago. The Frenchman emphasizes that he is still in a lot of pain, but that he is especially grateful that he can play with his children and have a normal life.

In the opening stages of the 2021 Bahrain Grand Prix there was a brief contact between Daniil Kvyat and Grosjean, after which the latter ended up in the crash barrier with a big bang. Less than a second later, the entire car was ablaze and people feared for the worst possible scenario. Miraculously, the then Haas driver managed to climb out of his car and was taken to hospital with minor injuries. The accident put an end to his long Formula 1 career in one fell swoop. Grosjean’s hands were burned to such an extent that he was unable to enter the last two races of the season.

Operation upcoming

A few days after the crash, Grosjean was allowed to return home, where he was able to continue to recover. “The right hand is 100 percent good. I only have to apply sunscreen when I go out in the sun, because it is new skin,” he tells the In the Fast Lane Podcast. “The left hand is a bit more damaged. I have another skin graft in early November. I may have another one at the end of 2022, so there’s still some work to be done.”

“It will never be perfect. It’s painful, but you learn to live with it. It’s not a serious pain, but it’s always there,” he continues. “But you know, I can play with my kids, I can drive a car and generally live a normal life. There are a few things that I’m a little limited with, but for 95 percent everything works. It just doesn’t look good, but well it’s my war wound.”

Grosjean in racing

Although his left hand is not quite the old one yet, the Frenchman is racing again. Last year he did this with the IndyCar team of Dale Coyne Racing, with which he managed to take three podium places. He will join the IndyCar team of Andretti Autosport next year.
